Hello! My name is Martha. I’m about 5-years old and weigh about 20 lbs. I used to live in a puppy mill making babies and now I am enjoying the comforts of a home and the love from my foster family, while I look for my forever family.

They say Shibas are the cats of the dog world and whoever said that must have known about me because I am very cat-like! My favorite spot is on a human’s lap while they are sitting in a chair or on the couch. When my humans are gone, my second favorite spot to be is in that same chair - this time I just get to have it all to myself! I even do my best eating in the chair or couch, while my human holds the dog dish. If you try to put my bowl on the ground I will just try to bury it. I’ll admit, I am a bit quirky!

I am very skittish around loud noises - kids, vacuums, etc., and I try to bolt out of any door that is opened, so a family with older kids (or no children) would be best for me. I also don’t like moving cars, so a quiet neighborhood would be ideal for me. I do need a house with a yard to get out all my energy that I’ve built up lounging on the couch and follow my huntress instincts. I am starting to play with my foster sister more, too, and it is helping me come out of my shell a bit. So a home with an easygoing dog would be great for me!

I can’t wait to meet my future family and start cuddling the days away with them!

IMPORTANT: If you are interested in Martha, please email her personal secretary, Ali, at Ali@shibarescue.org and let us know why you think your family would be a perfect home. We are an all-volunteer rescue, so it may take time to receive a response. Please limit to one email per family - we thank you in advance for your patience! If you’d like to speed up the process, please fill out and submit an application. To speed things up even more, send Ali your pet’s most recent vet records.

AN APPLICATION AND HOME VISIT MUST BE COMPLETED PRIOR TO ADOPTION.

Any one interested in adopting this dog must first complete an adoption application indicating the name of the dog(s) they are interested in learning more about.  Once the adoption application is received, our adoption coordinator will contact you.  You must respond to this email to set up your home visit and complete the approval process.  The entire adoption process is outlined on our web site.

NOTE: Due to the breed's independent and prey driven nature, Shibas should ALWAYS be leashed whenever they are outside of a securely fenced area.  In addition, many Shibas are door bolters and care should be taken around doors and other escape points.
