Surrendering you pet can be one of the most difficult
decisions to make as a pet owner.
Please consider carefully why you need to surrender.
If you are having trouble training your Shiba. There are many skilled training professionals and training centers in your area that should be able to help you. It is important to catch problems early because the more the animal repeats a negative behavior the longer it can take to correct it. It is best if you find a training center that is familiar working with primitive breed dogs and uses positive behavior training methods.
Shibas do go through a growth spurt and social changes during the time
of adolescence at 8 to 15 months of age, sometimes longer. These mood &
behavioral changes can become compounded if you do not spay or neuter
your pet. Regrettably many a dog owner has thrown in the towel when
their pet needed them the most during the maturing process.
If your pet exhibits serious behavioral problems understand that
you are at least partially to blame for not seeking guidance before
issues became unmanageable. If inappropriate behavior persists, we
recommend that you consult a qualified behaviorist, as most behavioral
problems can be rectified.
Please see a qualified behaviorist first and try to resolve your problems
with your pet before asking us to take your Shiba!
The reality is, if you no longer want your pet because of their extreme
behavior problems most likely no one else will either. Ask yourself this
question. Would you want to adopt your own dog if you were seeking a
family companion? (Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have
questions about Shiba behavior, we are here to help -
intake@shibarescue.org)
If your pet has aggression toward humans or your pet has bitten a
human, you need to know that we can not ask others to take on your
liability. Please do not attempt to pass on your severe pet problems to
someone else.
With all of this being said, if you must surrender an adoptable Shiba
please read our policies and guidelines listed below, we are here to
help as best we can.
There are a few important things you should know.
First, MSIR does not buy dogs.
Second, there is generally a waiting list for foster homes. Please contact our Intake Coordinator as early as possible about surrendering your Shiba. Fill out the Release Form at /forms/releaseform.html and please email pictures of the dog to the Intake Coordinator with the dog's name in the subject.
Third, since Midwest Shiba Inu Rescue is a volunteer, non-profit corporation, we ask that you help us in our mission. We appreciate donations of any of your dogs' items: leashes, food bowls, collars, halters, food, toys, beds, crates. If you cannot donate items to MSIR, we ask for a small donation to help with the cost of care while in rescue. If your Shiba is not spayed/neutered and fully updated on vaccinations, we will have it done before placement and we would appreciate a donation to help us with these costs. You can give us your donation (made out to MSIR) and/or the items when your dog goes to its new foster home.
Our foster space is limited, so there is no guarantee that we will be able to take in your dog. Once you surrender your dog to us, you will have no further knowledge or control of what happens to the dog. But, you can rest assured that we will give him or her the best possible care and find the perfect new family to love your dog.
