What
do I need for my new Shiba Inu?
(*)No-slip collar for walking (usually SMALL) (search for Martingale, Limited Choke Collar or No Slip). This is one of the few styles of collars that a Shiba cannot back out of. Good brands are Lupine, Premier. MSIR now sells Lupine gear at http://shibarescue.org/shoppe/lupine.html and profits go to save more Shibas!
(*) Leather roll collar—prevents matting of the neck fur
(*) Identification Tag with at least 1, but preferably 2, phone numbers.
(*) TWO leashes (always have a backup!) We do not recommend flexi-leashes! We recommend high-quality leather leashes as they are less likely to break. However, you might also purchase an inexpensive leash for the dog to use as a floor-cord inside.
(*)Crate, size medium or large
(*)Bedding/place to sleep (old blankets, towels, or rugs work too)
(*) Harness (Optional, ask your coordinator)
(*) 20’ training lead (especially useful if you do not have a fenced yard)
(*) Toys (think texture and variety: squeak toys—plush and plastic, Kongs, tennis balls, rope toys)
(*) RAW bones (NO cooked!) for teeth-cleaning; e.g. soup bones/knuckles (available at supermarkets).
NO rawhides for dogs under a year. This can easily cause diarrhea.
(*) Undercoat rake or shedding brush
(*) Everyday brush
(*) Nail clippers, styptic powder (optional, you may choose to use a professional)
(*) Dog shampoo when needed—choose one with Essential Fatty Acids for best results.
(*)Food (ask your volunteer coordinator which brand).
(*)Some kind of cheese or lunchmeat for high-value treats
(*)Food and water bowls – metal or ceramic is recommended as plastic can harbor bacteria.
(*)Small bottle of Nature’s Miracle or other enzyme cleaner, in case of accidents
(*)Bittering spray, like Bitter Apple (recommended for puppies)
