Neko is fostered in Gurnee, Illinois.

Neko ("cat" in Japanese) is a gorgeous red/sesame 11 yr old Shiba Inu female. She is an adorable snuggle bug and very affectionate for a Shiba. She has the softest, thickest fur and loves belly rubs!

She was an owner surrender due to divorce. She grew up in just one home with children (3 and 8 years old) and had an older Shiba furbrother who passed away about 1.5 years ago. At some point the family had cats too as she is amazing around our 2 high-energy kittens. Neko was definitely an apartment/town house dog and is slowly getting used to having a back yard. She only does her business on walks and is very good at waiting for walk-time, no accidents.

Neko is an amazing walker (heels to the right like a champ!) and loves to take walks on quiet side streets or parks.  She would do equally well as an apartment or house dog.  She prefers to be by her people when outside but is slowly exploring on her own and relaxing in the sunshine on our brick patio.  We are introducing her to our neighborhood dog friends and she warms up slowly to other dogs. She really values her personal space when encountering someone new. When properly introduced, Neko is a great walking buddy!

She gets along with both men and women. She’s a great watch dog and a knock or doorbell brings her running. She naps a lot which is typical for an 11 year old lady. She’s not too interested in toys but gets the zoomies after her walk and can be tempted to play a little tug-o-war with a soft toy. She’s had some bad tooth decay but we recently got her teeth cleaned. She’s not good at the vet and will nip or bite when being examined.

Neko has had an unusual diet. She doesn’t like ANY dog treats and we haven’t found a dry dog food that she will eat on her own. We are still working on this and hope to have a recommendation by the time she’s adopted. Her absolute favorite junk food is Tacos! She’s lost some weight after her arrival and we are working on getting her down closer to 20lbs.

Neko is looking for someone to follow around the house, someone to enjoy walks with, and a human to snuggle and take naps with.  Once she is fully comfortable, she will adore her family and look for lots of love and will give that love right back to you.

If you are willing to open up your home to this sweet girl and want more information, please email her foster mom Kat at

Any one interested in adopting this dog must first complete an adoption application indicating the name of the dog(s) they are interested in learning more about.  Once the adoption application is received, our adoption coordinator will contact you.  You must respond to this email to set up your home visit and complete the approval process.  The entire adoption process is outlined on our web site.

NOTE: Due to the breed's independent and prey driven nature, Shibas should ALWAYS be leashed whenever they are outside of a securely fenced area.  In addition, many Shibas are door bolters and care should be taken around doors and other escape points.
