Hi, meet Rico. Rico's humans moved across country and couldn't take him along. Luckily, they contacted MSIR to find him a forever home. Rico grew up with a brother dog and gets along well with other dogs except around the food dish, so we just feed him separated from the other dogs by a baby gate. He's fine with humans around his food dish. We haven't seen any human aggression. He can get excited and a little mouthy on occasion, but it only lasts a minute and he's back to normal. Rico can live in a home with other dogs, or be happy as the only dog getting all the attention. When he first came here, he did the Shiba snippy thing to the dogs and they all told him to knock it off. He listened and everyone gets along very well. He will run with the other dogs around our fenced in backyard. He hasn't shown any inclination to want to climb over the fence.

Rico is completely housetrained and hasn't had any accidents in the house. He will talk to you when he wants to go outside. If you ignore his signal, he'll keep talking. It is too cute. My husband picked him up and put him in bed one night and Rico thought that was heaven, so now when we don't know where he is, we'll find him laid out on the bed. So far, he hasn't jumped up on any furniture. Rico does enjoy chasing tennis balls and will return them to you sometimes. He hasn't chewed on any inappropriate items and has been a very nice houseguest.

Rico reportedly has food allergies and is fed a prescription diet and anti-itch medicine twice a day. So far, we're not seeing any environmental allergies. He's very treat motivated (we use his prescription diet for treats) and he will be fun to train. We don't crate Rico when we are not at home. He has been fine with free roam. He is crate trained so we leave the crate out with the doorr open and he will sometimes lie down and rest in his crate. He's been very easy to foster and we are enjoying his company.

Rico has been diagnosed with a grade 2/3 luxating patella. Currently it is not bothering him and surgery is not recommended or required at this time. Potential adopters will want to continue to have Rico routinely examined by a vet to watch his allergies and knees.

The adoption fee for Rico is $250.  Please refer to the MSIR website for more information on the application and adoption process.

NOTE: DUE TO THE BREED'S INDEPENDENT NATURE, SHIBAS SHOULD ALWAYS BE LEASHED WHENEVER THEY ARE OUTSIDE OF A SECURELY FENCED AREA. IN ADDITION, MANY SHIBAS ARE DOOR BOLTERS AND CARE SHOULD BE TAKEN AROUND DOORS AND OTHER ESCAPE POINTS.
  • Upon completion of each positive motivation-based obedience class, MSIR will rebate the new adopters $25.
  • And, upon earning a Good Canine Citizen certificate, MSIR will rebate another $25!

Any one interested in adopting Rico must first complete an adoption application and indicate, in the comments section, their interest in Rico.
The entire adoption process is outlined on our web site. Once the adoption application is received,  Eun will contact you.
