Charlie is an adorable, shiba inu puppy. He was transferred to MSIR because he needed patella surgery. Charlie has recovered well from surgery and is now available for adoption. Charlie is a very typical young shiba dog that gets along well with other dogs.
Charlie is potty trained and crate trained. However, he has frequent opportunities to go outside. He likes his crate and is used to eating and sleeping in it. He will run into the crate the second a treat, water or food bowl is placed inside. He's content to be crated at night and when needed during the day.
Charlie gets along well with our three resident shibas and takes cues and correction from the other dogs. He enjoys playing with his foster sibling Zoe. He only moves at one speed which is fast. He quickly runs through legs as he goes about his business. He loves to play with squeaky toys and play keep away with the other dogs.
Charlie is still a puppy and needs to be supervised when loose in the home. He hasn't had the opportunity to chew on anything inappropriate but is still at the age where that will happen if not supervised. He will run to the back door when he wants to come inside. But, we have not had any luck teaching Charlie to sit or stay. LOL. Any family adopting Charlie should plan to attend a positive obediance class to bond with him.
Charlie is a typical shiba in that he is very independent. People are here to provide food & water and make sure he has toys to play with. He is a wild little guy at home but is much more cautious in new places and when he meets new people. He has stayed with other people when his foster family has been out of town and stayed close to his crate for a few days before letting his true personality shine.
Charlie has been leash walked for 4 months and still pulls when on a leash. He will run towards cars on the road -- he doesn't realixe they are a danger. Therefore, Charlie's new family will need to take every precaution to ensure he does not run out the front door or slip off a leash. Charlie does well in our fenced in back yard and has not shown any attempts at escaping or even really wanting to. Charlie's ideal family will be committed to short daily walks and/or have a fenced in yard.
Charlie would do best in a home with another dog that is a good role model and play-mate since he takes his cues from other dogs. A good match would be a dog that will play a bit a few times a day but not too intensely. Charlie has recovered from patella surgery and just like people if they overdo it, there is always the possibility that the ligaments may loosen up. Therefore, Charlie should not engage in activities that are too intensive. Such as play at dog parks, agility, jogging or go on extremely long walks. The perfect home for Charlie will go on three 10-20 minute walks a day and have short periods of playtime in the backyard. It is a requirement that if you are interested in Charlie you have a veterinarian that is experienced in with luxating patellas or continue to take her to Crest Animal Hospital for her vet care.
The adoption fee for Charlie is $350. All potential adopters must have an application and home visit on file. Local homes will be given preference.

NOTE: DUE TO THE BREED'S INDEPENDENT NATURE, SHIBAS SHOULD ALWAYS BE LEASHED WHENEVER THEY ARE OUTSIDE OF A SECURELY FENCED AREA. IN ADDITION, MANY SHIBAS ARE DOOR BOLTERS AND CARE SHOULD BE TAKEN AROUND DOORS AND OTHER ESCAPE POINTS.

- Upon completion of each positive motivation-based obedience class, MSIR
will rebate the new adopters $25.
