Ace is fostered in St. Louis, Missouri.

Ace is a handsome and sweet 6-year-old that was recently an owner surrender. He will need some extra time and patience to develop trust with humans. He needs loving, patient adopters that will help him learn to trust people. Ace is learning how to live in a home outside of the kennel.

Ace just finished a 3 week stay n’ learn program at Casey Rays STL dog trainers. He knows all basic commands and thrives in training. He is very smart and really responds to the training. Ace came to us with pretty serious fear based aggression, he didn’t know how to be a dog. He is learning slowly and doing great with his foster family; which happens to be the trainer that worked with him. He is using his training everyday to get through the day. He has resource guarding issues, they are much better and more controllable now with the training but it is still something that will always be apart of his life.

He needs a home that is active, he enjoys being outside and walking. He will doing great in a home that has a fenced in yard because he does enjoy the outdoors. It takes him a while to warm up to humans and gain trust. Once he trust you he will listen and respect you, but you have to earn it in his eyes. He can do good around another dog however, that dog needs to be his size or bigger than him. It does take him a little bit to get comfortable around other dogs. The other dog needs to be a balanced and confident dog to make Ace comfortable.

Ace is house trained and has had no accidents in his foster home. Ace is crate trained, he is noisy at first but quiets down after awhile. He has been sleeping in his foster parents bedroom and does great. He will sleep in a crate if needed.

Ace is looking for someone to follow around the house, someone to enjoy walks with, and a human to show him love and compassion. Once he is fully comfortable, he will adore his family and look for lots of love and will give that love right back to you.

Ace will have some specific needs in a forever home. He will require a home with no small children. He would also do best in a home with no cats or tiny dogs. Ace interacts best with dogs his size or larger, so a toy breed would not be a good fit. We strongly prefer that Ace find a home in the St Louis area so his family will have access to the trainer who has been working with him. We would also like the adopter to attend a few training sessions with Ace to help with his transition to a new home. Previous Shiba or other primitive dog breed experience will be preferred.

For questions or additional information please contact Cathy, our foster home coordinator at

Any one interested in adopting this dog must first complete an adoption application indicating the name of the dog(s) they are interested in learning more about.  Once the adoption application is received, our adoption coordinator will contact you.  You must respond to this email to set up your home visit and complete the approval process.  The entire adoption process is outlined on our web site.

NOTE: Due to the breed's independent and prey driven nature, Shibas should ALWAYS be leashed whenever they are outside of a securely fenced area.  In addition, many Shibas are door bolters and care should be taken around doors and other escape points.
